Some Freshwater Fishing Pictures

Well, we had a chance to go fishing again, and had a beautiful afternoon on a local lake.

I didn’t catch anything, but had a few pickerel on the line.

My son however, caught a painted turtle! He was using dough balls for bait and there were lots of turtles in the lake.

I warned him to be careful but …

Fortunately I was able to get the turtle off of the hook without harming him.

So I promised some pictures from our last fishing trip and here they are!

The first is a sunfish my son caught and the second is a roach fish.

Had a nice afternoon both times!

Hope you get some time to get out and catch some nice fish as well.

First Freshwater Fishing Trip – 2011

Finally had a chance to go fishing last weekend!

First trip this year, so it was important that my 7 year old son had a successful trip!

We stocked up on some worms and took a few lures as well. Checked over the rods and reels and everything looked good!

We were ready to go. So we headed over to our local stream and began fishing. Since there is a current in the stream, I gave my son a few pointers about fishing with a bobber and live bait and letting it drift while keeping the line fairly tight. After a few casts, he had his first fish! Caught a “roach” fish.

A few worms and casts later and he had his second roach. It was late in the day so we didn’t stay real long, but it was still fun for both of us.

Yeah … Dad caught a small roach and a sunny as well.  🙂  But most of all, Dad got to spend some quality time with his son!

I’ll post some pictures of the fish next post.

Freshwater Fishing – Summer’s Gone

Well, it’s official, the summer is gone and I only was able to go fishing 3 times!

Not that my sons didn’t bug me to go. Rather it was just that I’ve been working so much that I just didn’t get the time to go.

Plus my older son left the nest this summer and joined the Navy! While I’m happy that he’s off to find his lot in life, I miss him and he was another reason to head off fishing.

So my younger son and I only got the chance to fish 3 times. We didn’t catch any bass this year, but we did catch lots of sunnies! I enjoy fishing, even for sunnies, and they always provide action for my younger son. So it was a sunny fishing season for us.

On a side note, I bought another trout stamp which didn’t get any use. 🙁 Maybe next year… right?

Where is The Time Going?

Hi Folks,

How has your summer been going?

Have you had much time for fishing?

I sure haven’t! I’ve been so busy with work that I haven’t gotten the chance to get out on the lake or stream.
Consequently, I haven’t been posting much about fresh water fishing here!

My older son left back in June to join the US Navy and so that’s one less voice to prod me into making the time to go fishing. But my younger son still asks me every once in a while.

So since I can’t recount any fishing tales here, how about some of you post a reply and let us all know how you’re making out fishing?

I’d sure love to hear some good freshwater fishing stories!

I’ll try and get some time to pull out the ole trusty rod and reel and let you know how I made out as soon as I can.

In the mean-time, have a great summer and may your creels be full.
(Does anybody even use a creel anymore? Do you all know what a creel is?)

Cub Scouts Fishing Trip

My younger son is in the Cub Scouts and they had a fishing trip planned 2 weekends ago. It wasn’t a freshwater fishing trip though.

We actually went over to the Somers Point bay just outside of Ocean City, NJ. The group had chartered the “Duke of Fluke” for the afternoon and the guys were all excited to be going!

It was fairly windy and being a large pontoon boat, the captain decided to stay and fish in the bay area only. There were 41 people fishing in the group and after receiving the usual instructions we were off.

As you can tell by the title of this blog, I’m NOT a big saltwater fishing fan. The last saltwater fishing party boat that I was on was back in the 1970s! But I believe everyone should try it at least once, so I allowed my son his first ever fishing party boat experience.

We fished for 4 hours and out of 41 people only 4 fish were caught. Three adults caught 2 fluke (that’s flounder in case you were wondering) and 1 bluefish. But the big catch of the day went to one of the cub scouts! He caught a nice striper – about 8 lbs and around 30 inches long.

Even though it was windy, the weather was nice and the sun was out the whole afternoon. I enjoyed myself even though I didn’t catch anything. But my son’s thoughts on the experience – “that was lame Dad!” Seems he’s used to catching fish when we go fishing. 🙂 I explained why we didn’t really catch that much on the boat and told him it was nice spending some time together – but that didn’t seem to matter much to him. Kids just want to catch fish!

And in fact, when I went party boat fishing with my dad back in the 70’s, I did catch some porgies. Since it was early in the season, perhaps I’ll take him again, once the fishing season heats up.

Oh, I almost forgot. Do you remember watching cartoons where someone catches a boot while fishing? Well it actually happened on this trip! A man caught a black and yellow fisherman’s boot! LOL – I always wondered why they showed that in the cartoons!

What Freshwater Fishing Rod Do You Use?

Wow! It’s been quite a while since I’ve made a post. So lets get right to it.

I was reading about a new fishing rod made by “Element 21” that actually uses some bio-technology to add carrot fibers into the rod creation process! Can you believe that? Very cool.

I’ve used my good ole trusty Garcia Mitchell for about forty years and it hasn’t ever failed me. It was top of the line and is a lite-ultralite rod. It makes it very easy casting the light lures I like to use and I’ve landed some nice 5-6 lb fish on it.

But after reading about these new “Carrot Stix” fishing rods, I’m tempted to buy one and check them out. So I was wondering if any of my readers have any experience with these new rods? If you do, please post a comment here and let me know how you like it? I would really appreciate it!

Largest Freshwater Fish – A Perch?

What do you think of when someone tells you they caught a perch? You probably think of a small panfish – fun to catch and release, but not big enough to keep and eat. Right?

So imagine how surprised I was as I read that the perch in Africa can get to be huge. How huge? Well check this out:

That’s quite a large freshwater fish!?! You’ll be amazed to learn that the man who caught the fish had to fight off a crocodile while trying to land the fish! Wow … and I thought I had it hard fishing – fighting my way through the briar patches and dealing with ticks! lol It kind of reminds me of a real life version of Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man And The Sea” – only this was in freshwater.

The Secret Improves Freshwater Fishing Results

Your Attitude Can Affect Your Fishing results!

With all this talk about “The Secret” and calling positive energy into your life, it reminded me of an article I read years ago on how to improve your catch while fishing. I believe it was an article in “Field and Stream” but I’m not 100 percent certain of that.

Anyway, what I remember from the article was that the writer was talking about his friend and how he approached fishing. His friend didn’t really act like he was going to catch anything when they went fishing together and most often, he wouldn’t. He didn’t expect to catch anything, though he had high hopes of doing so.

The author went on to explain that since his friend didn’t expect to catch anything, each time he would get a strike, he would miss setting the hook and would ultimately miss catching the fish. The author then extolled the virtues of expecting to catch a fish – how you would cast a certain way and how when you got a strike, you’d be ready to set the hook and this would improve your chances of catching a fish. He also said to envision that a fish was following your lure and was about to strike at any moment.

I was young at the time I read it but I thought about it and put that piece of advice into practice. It has proven itself time and time again! I would almost always out-fish anyone I happened to be with and usually caught the biggest fish when a group of us would go fishing! Was it this “secret’ that caused me to be more successful? I can’t say for sure, but I can certainly tell you that it didn’t hurt!

Think about it – seriously – and it should make sense to you. If you’re ready to catch a fish, you’re more likely to do just that!

I had occasion to share this article’s idea with my sons when we went fishing over this summer. It was a hot sunny day and my older son was saying “there’s no fish here – we won’t catch anything!” I explained to the two of them how your attitude can affect many things in your life … including fishing! I then told them about the article and it helped my older son turn around his thinking.

Did we catch any fish that day? Sure we did! And I’ll bet that our attitudes had something to do with that!

Here’s hoping your attitude helps you catch more fish as well!
